Home Support Worker

A Home Support Worker (HSW), also known as a Community Health Worker, Care Aide in Kelowna British Columbia, performs a variety of duties focused on helping clients remain independent and safe in their own homes. The role combines personal care assistance with essential household management and emotional support. 
The specific duties of an HSW include:
Personal Care and Assistance
  • Bathing and Hygiene: Assisting with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, showering, grooming, hair care, and oral hygiene.
  • Dressing and Undressing: Providing help with getting dressed and undressed.
  • Mobility Support: Aiding in ambulation, transferring clients in/out of bed or a chair, and helping with positioning to prevent injury and promote circulation.
  • Toileting and Continence Care: Assisting with using the bathroom, managing incontinence products, and performing peri-care.
  • Feeding: Planning and preparing meals tailored to specific dietary needs, and assisting clients with eating or feeding if necessary. 
Health-Related Tasks
  • Medication Management: Providing medication reminders and, under the direction of a nurse or supervisor, potentially assisting with the administration of medications.
  • Health Monitoring: Observing the client’s physical and behavioral changes (e.g., vital signs, skin condition, appetite changes) and reporting any concerns to the appropriate healthcare professionals or supervisors.
  • Routine Nursing Tasks: May perform simple health-related duties as directed by a healthcare professional, such as changing non-sterile dressings or collecting specimens. 
Household Management and Companionship
  • Light Housekeeping: Performing routine tasks such as laundry, washing dishes, making beds, dusting, and light vacuuming to maintain a safe and healthy living environment.
  • Companionship: Offering emotional support, engaging in conversation, and providing a reassuring presence to combat loneliness and isolation.
  • Errands and Transportation: May coordinate or provide transportation for medical appointments, grocery shopping, or other social activities. 
HSWs work closely with the client’s “circle of care” (family, nurses, therapists) to ensure care plans are followed and to advocate for the client’s needs.
